Robert Billing
Robert Claudius Billing was an Anglican Suffragan Bishop 〔(National Church Institutions Database of Manuscripts and Archives )〕 from 1888 to 1898.〔”Church History in Queen Victoria's Reign” Fowler,M: Whitefish Kessinger Publishing, 2005 ISBN 1-4179-7356-0〕 Born into a clerical family,〔His father was the Rev R. Billing, sometime Vicar of Wye, Kent > “Who was Who” 1897-2007 London, A & C Black, 2007 ISBN 978-0-19-954087-7〕 he was educated at Worcester College, Oxford and ordained in 1857 and began his career with a curacy at St Peter’s, Colchester followed by a period as Secretary of the Church Missionary Society. In 1863 he became Vicar of Louth.〔"The Clergy List, Clerical Guide and Ecclesiastical Directory" London, Hamilton & Co 1889〕 After this he was Rural Dean of Spitalfields and then Suffragan Bishop. He died (technically) in post on 21 February 1898,〔''Death Of The Bishop Of Bedford. '' The Times Tuesday, Feb 22, 1898; pg. 4; Issue 35446; col F〕 having ceased active work in 1895.〔His duties being taken on by the Bishop of Stepney > Fowler (ibid)〕 A memorial to him can be seen at St Paul’s Cathedral.〔"Memorials of St. Paul's Cathedral" Sinclair,W.M: London, Chapman and Hall,1909〕
